Talk to your landlord. If you rent an older house, condo, apartment or manufactured home, talk to your property manager about larger improvements like insulation, new heating equipment and high-efficiency windows. Incentives are available to single-family rental property owners, as well as multifamily property owners, which can make energy-efficiency improvements much more affordable. These upgrades could be an attractive investment for your landlord and further reduce your energy costs.
Access community resources. Oregon Housing and Community Services offers special weatherization programs for renters who meet income guidelines, but make sure to talk with your landlord about any upgrades to the property.
Portland-area renters can also take advantage of free weatherization workshops hosted by the Community Energy Project. These hands-on workshops are open to everyone and cover low-cost energy-saving techniques, how to install draft-stopping materials and window kits and where to find additional resources.
